Red
Mountain, British Columbia - Red Resort is one
of the oldest ski resorts in Canada. It was the site of
the first World Cup race ever held in Canada and frequently
the location of the Canadian Downhill Championships. More
Red Resort racers - including Olympic gold medalists Kerrin
Lee-Gartner and Nancy Greene - have graduated to the National
Ski Team than from any other ski resort in North America.
Red Resort actually spans two mountains.
The original Red (after which the resort is named) is now
dwarfed by Granite mountain, rising to 2040 metres (6699
feet), above Red's 1590 metre (5208 foot) peak. The resort's
large ski area doubled in size recently with the installation
of two new chairs and a T Bar.
Located just 10 miles north of the US
border, Red Resort has a long history dating back to gold
rush days. Western Canada's first chairlift was erected
here in 1947 and, more importantly, Red offers one of the
30 biggest verticals in North America. There are 400 acres
of groomed trails and a further 800 acres of tree skiing,
with slopes descending in all directions from Granite Mountain.
The resort is located in a snow belt and
has a reputation for abundant falls of light, fluffy powder.
It also has a reputation for tough skiing with three triple-black
diamond and more than 11 double-black diamond runs. There
are still a wide choice of blues and greens however. The
nearby town of Rossland (5 minutes away) has most facilities
and accommodations.
