Skiing at Alta, Utah

Alta, Utah - Best for good skiers; mostly open and bowl skiing. Good novice runs also. Heli-skiing available. Lift tickets are a bargain compared to some other resorts. Many ski lodges here do not accept credit cards. Connected to four other resorts by the Ski Utah Interconnect, which are back-country routes for advanced skiers. Must be accompanied by a Forest Service-approved guide and travel in groups of six to fourteen skiers. Tour takes six to eight hours and must be reserved ahead of time.

Alta and Snowbird are located in the Wasatch-Cache National Forest, in the Wasatch mountains just east of Salt Lake City. Alta lies at the top of Little Cottonwood Canyon above Snowbird. While the two areas are not interconnected by lifts, it is usually possible to ski down to Snowbird from Alta via the Wildcat area. The route is pretty steep.

Alta offers some of the finest terrain and snow conditions in North America, along with lift ticket prices that make those of most other resorts in its class look like highway robbery. Along with Snowbird, it is best suited to advanced and expert skiers, and nightlife is slim to none. Beginners and intermediates are likely to have a better time in the Park City Area or at Solitude. Alta is one of the few resorts in the world that do not permit snowboarding.
